(CNN) — Brazil’s top court is investigating controversial presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro for a tweet he made claiming that the measles and polio vaccine were linked to cancer.
On Friday, a judge ordered Bolsonaro to appear before the court in July 22 to answer questions related to the tweet. The court posted a statement on the CNT.org website, which is dedicated to encouraging democracy.
Bolsonaro posted his tweet in July 2016. He claims the tweets are ‘sincere and genuine’ and that ‘as a candidate, I work from the heart’.
Possibly the nation’s most contentious election ever, the presidential election will not be decided until October 7. Bolsonaro has been leading in polls, but his efforts to convince thousands of his supporters to vote for him could be undermined by such claims.
Bolsonaro, a former Army captain and congressman from Rio de Janeiro, has built his support by adopting hardline policies on immigration, security and sexual harassment.
But his inflammatory rhetoric has caused concern among critics in a country that is still emerging from years of deep political and economic crises. His campaign has been dogged by a raft of corruption allegations.
