In the original, the military’s sister city was a Dutch settlement in Puerto Rico known as Puerto Rico.
The original film, which was based on the Broadway musical, was released in 1961. The musical premiered in 1950. The new film was filmed in New York City in 2012.
Alongside Bernstein and Sondheim, Bernstein was also nominated for two Academy Awards for best score and best score for lyrics. Sondheim was nominated for four Oscars: two for best original song – I Feel Pretty and One Hand, One Heart – as well as one for best original score, Among the Stars.
The new film is released on 5 December.
The action of the original film is set in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan. In the new film, we find that the police chief has hired a Russian immigrant, Jazz Player, to redraw the Puerto Rican flag in order to track down a possible Russian spy, and that the enemy from the past is now back, attacking the Russian and American investigators.
Set in 1962, the new film features new songs in which a group of young people confront their racial prejudices. These songs will serve as the new ones Bernstein and Sondheim wrote for the new film. “I Can Tell It’s You” is among them.
