Former N.C. Congresswoman 'Fill My Hat' Mourned as Giannini Dies at 100

Margaret Giannini, a major part of former North Caroline Rep. Patrick Kennedy’s Fill My Hat campaign when he served in Congress, died this week at the age of 100.

Giannini, who battled seizures and neurogenesis as a young girl, endured tremendous adversity throughout her life and went on to earn a degree in nutrition. She often traveled the country testifying at Capitol Hill hearings on behalf of people with disabilities.

“Your struggle has never been in vain,” Kennedy said at Giannini’s 90th birthday party in 2013. “You have touched lives.”

My father’s campaign aide Margaret Giannini passed away today at the age of 100. Her simple campaign motto “Fill My Hat” was very special to me. The O’Reilly Factor reported that in the late 1980s, Giannini refused to take pills to reduce her epileptic seizures because they would make her sleep.

“Eventually, Margaret told me, ‘I don’t want to know if I’m going to wake up or die, because I won’t be taking anything,'” said O’Reilly.

President Obama’s treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin said Giannini was an inspiration for people everywhere.

“She was a rare person. She was a really great supporter of the president and a great friend of mine,” Mnuchin said on “Fox & Friends.”

Mnuchin said that in the months before her death, Giannini urged him to raise the personal debt ceiling of the American people.

“So we can finally start taking care of people with debt. There’s never been a time when it was so important,” Mnuchin said.
