The quarterfinals of the U.S. Open have begun.

Iga Swiatek, the world’s No. 12 player, is in a three-way matchup with No. 14 Jule Niemeier and the sixth-seeded Kaito Naito.

Swiatek was a major surprise by winning the top seed at the $25,000 Challenge in New York. He was ranked No. 87 in the world.

On Tuesday, she beat fellow European Maria Sanchez of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 for the win.

“To defeat Jule by beating her, it seemed to me that I was a little bit stronger than she was,” Swiatek said. “I had a tough match, but it was a tough match. It was a very intense match.”

Swiatek, who had never won at US Open tournament, has now won two of her three previous meetings with Niemeier. And she had never held a set point in a match this early in a tournament.

“When there’s a big match, I know I have to be ready,” she said. “There were a few games, and a lot of things went in my favor. I like playing this way. I’m just trying very hard.

“I was always a bit nervous out there. I’m very happy
