Lebanon: Asylum for Palestinians from Syria

Footage from Lebanese television shows the aftermath of an explosion in a refugee camp in Lebanon’s Akkar region that killed two Palestinians and wounded a number of others.

Ramallah has been hit by waves of retaliatory rocket fire over the past two weeks.

The border area has been the scene of clashes between Syrian rebels and the Lebanese Armed Forces. Over the weekend, at least 10 Palestinian gunmen from the Tawfik Nailah camp were killed when they tried to flee across the border into Syria.

The army had opened fire on the fleeing militants, but launched an investigation after accusations from militants that it had killed civilians.

This week, Tawfik Nailah’s population has multiplied again, as thousands of Palestinians took refuge in refugee camps in Tifilin, Shoura, and Akkar following fresh fighting in Lebanon.

Israel responded on Friday night by firing missiles at two positions in Quneitra.

A cameraman for the Lebanese television channel Al Jadeed witnessed the funeral procession when a bomb exploded. He was uninjured in the blast, but another journalist at the scene was killed. The Lebanese journalist is said to have been filming Palestinian mourners around the time of the explosion.
