(CNN) — The US Supreme Court let a Texas abortion law stand, but said anti-abortion groups can sue for damages.
The court on Monday let stand a lower court’s ruling that denied requests by Planned Parenthood, abortion providers and two abortion-rights groups to block a 2015 law requiring abortion clinics to meet the standards of ambulatory surgical centers.
The law’s provisions included one that precluded doctors performing abortions from having abortions themselves or even supervising those abortions, and requires abortions be performed in surgical centers.
Last year the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law. A lower court has given Planned Parenthood until December 5 to file another request to block it.
Lawyers for the groups said that Texas lawmakers “rushed” to pass the law, and they planned to contest it.
But Texas said it should not be blocked. “The remaining appeals, including the case which the Supreme Court has temporarily stayed, are not pending” pending the court’s decision on the bill before it.
