The error in the calculation of the number of Republicans who believe in the law

Letters to the Editor: If Republicans win, the last thing they’ll give us is law and order

To the editor: The letter “Democrats don’t even believe in the law” (Page C-6) contains an error in the calculation. The letter incorrectly refers to the number of Democrats who believe in the law, compared to the number of Republicans who do. By way of the correct calculation, there are more Republicans who don’t believe in the law, than Democrats who don’t believe in the law. In the same issue of the Daily Pilot, a letter to the editor (Page C-2) was written by a member of the Republican Party, who, like the author of the letter to the editor, doesn’t believe in the law.

In each of these cases, the problem is one of perception. Both the letters to the editor were written on the assumption that those who believe in the law do not believe in the police, but, rather, they believe in the state. It is their perception of what the law requires, rather than the law, that causes the error.

The correct statement of the number of Republicans who believe in the law, when compared to the number of Democrats who believe in the law, is correct.

There are at least seven Democrats who believe in the law, compared to three Republicans. The error in the calculation is the result of an incorrect perception of the number of Republican beliefs in the law.

The author of the letter to the editor, in which he asserts that Republicans do not believe in the police, is clearly wrong. In fact, he believes that the police make the laws.
