The GOP Must Win This Race in Florida

Jackie Calmes: Ron DeSantis proves that cruetly is a Republican trait

It is really hard to go against the grain in Tampa. Not only is it difficult, it is also an absolute certainty that if the GOP wants to win this race in Florida, it must defeat Ron DeSantis. If that were to happen, then the GOP can only win with the help of the Democratic candidate in a special election for U.S. House District 24. Since it is a congressional race, a Democrat would have to win this seat by 2 percentage points or less to win it on Election Day.

This is why it is really hard to go against the grain in Tampa. Not only is it difficult, it is also an absolute certainty that if the GOP wants to win this race in Florida, it must defeat Ron DeSantis. If that were to happen, then the GOP can only win with the help of the Democratic candidate in a special election for U.S. House District 24. Since it is a congressional race, a Democrat would have to win this seat by 2 percentage points or less to win it on Election Day.

That is why it is so important that DeSantis defeat Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by a wide margin. It will be impossible for Gillum to win this race on Election Night and still be the Democratic nominee. It requires a lot of energy and the ability to make history for Florida and take advantage of our electoral system. That is why I have always put the race in the same category as an even more special election for DFL state Senate District 11 just 11 months before.

It is truly sad to see a man who grew up a very decent, honest and patriotic American, with the most sincere and genuine values of success and excellence, turn away from an election he has spent his entire life voting for. He has worked so hard for his election to Congress, his life has been devoted to making sure he would be the first elected President from Florida, the youngest ever to hold that office and to make sure Florida voters saw a difference when he became the first ever black and gay U.S. Senator.
