Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev hopes to join Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic as members of the US Open’s “billionaires club”.
Medvedev is among the seeds for the US Open, and is ranked 20th in the world.
He became the highest-ranked Russian in over a decade when he won his first ATP title at the Rio Open last month.
“If it’s to come here in a few years it will be great,” said Medvedev, 20.
“I have the watch in my room so maybe I can buy a bottle of champagne and spray it.”
Medvedev is competing at Flushing Meadows for the first time and beat French veteran Richard Gasquet to reach the quarter-finals at Rio – but his Grand Slam breakthrough looks like a long way off yet.
“I don’t know if I will be in the top 10 at the end of the year,” said Medvedev.
“Maybe I will have a chance to be in the Top 100. But I will focus on tournament by tournament.
“It’s not to say that my goal is winning Wimbledon one day or winning the US Open. My goal is to reach at least a semi-final in Grand Slams.
“Right now, I’m 20 and working hard, trying to improve my game.”
